Building RV-7 - Tips & Tricks?

    My empennage kit arrived yesterday.


    I'm looking at the scotch brite wheel, CP-7AM.  Is this the one that would be best recommended?


    I've also looked at a number of bench grinders for it, does anybody have a recommendation on the grinder?  It looks to me that if I'm deburring a large part the grinder would get in the way or force an awkward angle that wouldn't play well with deburring.


    What I'm thinking is just getting a polishing wheel instead of a bench grinder since it will have the wheel fully exposed and a fair distance out from the motor housing.

    I use a Scotchbrite wheel on a bench grinder for deburring small parts like stiffeners, ribs, and brackets. 

     

    For large parts like skins and spars, I use a small diameter Scotchbrite wheel and a die grinder.  I believe I use both a 1" and 2" diameter wheel.  This also works well for deburring lightening holes on ribs.

    Thanks Karl.  Sorry I missed your builders meet, we had a vendor in from out of town and I only had an hour window.


    Did you remove the guards on the bench grinder or leave them in place?


    Is there anywhere local to get the scotch brite or just online?  I ordered the CP-7AM from Avery and it looks like it along with some other goodies will be here tomorrow.


    Did you also say you are using the pneumatic rivet squeezer?  It looks like Avery had some red label ones and that a 3" yoke would be the best match.  That looks like it would probably be the most expensive tool out of anything but I hear people swear by them.  Do you or somebody know, do those take special dies or can I use the same dies I use in the C-Frame and hand squeezer? (Assuming so.)

    My bench grinder has the guards in place.

     

    My Scotchbrite wheels have come from Avery or Cleaveland.  I haven't explored a local supplier.

     

    I do use a pneumatic squeezer and it does use the same dies as the c-frame or hand squeezer.

    There is an exact set of rivet squeezers at the hangar.

    They can be checked out.


    It would be nice to have a pneumatic set.  After all these years, you think someone would have donated a set by now.

    If you would like to "test drive" some of the tools and techniques for the RV construction let me know.  We can set something up in my shop.  Might provide a different perspective.

    Sure! I'd get a chance to check out your build too.


    I'd like to primer the interior.  Any recommendations there?  I have paint sprayers so I'd probably just buy whatever I need to mix together and then spray it on.  I've auto painted some things years back with excellent results.

    Yes, I use that wheel as well as a 2" x 3/4".  Let me know when you would like to "test drive" some the other tools.

    I'll give you a call soon about checking out your build and tools.


    I'm slowly and gradually getting my build area put together.  I don't want to start any work until my working area is completely in order.  


    While at Lowe's looking at Shop Vac's, I instead bought a 2nd workbench.  Not too shabby, it has a metal back pegboard, light, built in power strip and a number of tool draws.  The draws is what sold me, I don't want to buy another tool chest but the peg board and draws is more than enough room to store all my aircraft tools.


    I'm still debating on the pneumatic squeezer.  I might check out the chapters "main squeeze" and see if that's a good compromise between the regular squeezer I have and the pneumatic.  I support the value I'll get out of the pneumatic would be worth it.  If the main squeeze sells for $285, but I could lose less than $285 selling a used pneumatic after I'm done with the build, I suppose it's worth it.
