Basic Flight Traing

Check out this site. With interested chapter members we could have a great time and provide a beneficial  service to new pilots. look at this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=GjdQhNHsJps at time 1:35. We could modify this idea with a smaller version of a non-flying glider set on a tri-pod anchored to the ground pointed into the wind and provide familiaization to aircraft controls..a real feel simulator that could be used for initial training of basic airplane construction and flight controls. It could also be used at Plane Fun to grab the interest of new membership.

Just a thought from the Prop Shop.

Lonzo, this may be just a bit too cool.  What I would have done to do this when I was just a kid.  This weekend I had several young people out at the hangar building an airplane that they can learn to fly in.  There is interest out there and the only place a kid can get any exposure nowadays is at someplace like our chapter.  The days of riding your bike out to the airport like I did when I was a kid are over.  We need to do more to help young kids get into flying.

Are we going to have a future where members of 582 converge on weekends and operate a 10-20 student, 13 years old and older, model (line control), glider (GOAT-like), and airplane (aka Flare) construction/maintenance school during the afternoon after having given flight training in the morning and then give more flight training in the evening before having a night cap fueled bull session leading to a new crop of LSI's who will do the same thing?

    That's what I'm working toward.

This is my hope my son.  And there is no sense getting out of bed in the morning if you don't bring a pocket full of hope with you.

    Capt. Ryan,
In my opinion, if we do not find the interested members that feel this is important, create a working plan and implement it then all we will do is talk about how cool would it be to offer this oportunity.....I think you would be a great leader to put this all together.

I feel not only would it be cool to present this opportunity to our Chapter Members and Community but to have a National Contest to create a basic low cost no frill, not fast, not capable of OMG climb rates.. basic airplane, easy/quick to build airplane with possible local material purchases, based and operated from our Chapter. Other than the Legal Eagle, Mini_max type aircraft there is nothing out there except the Free Plans type Goat Glider types that could be engine equiped and would serve the entry level pilot or those that have minimum funds and just wants to fly. I think if we had enough interested members we could get funding/support from the Aviation Community such as Aircraft Spruce, EAA, Wicks etc. There was a similar Contest years ago that had great support but was more towards the higher cost more complicated aircraft..I'm talking of a means to get the wishers and dreamers flying...or we could take the Goat type, WoodHopper style construction..produce our version and support aviation by offering a motorized example and give away our ideas in a do it yourself article in Sport Aviation.

What do ya say Ryan...ready to take the Control Yoke on this? There are several that will assist?

My 10c - I have plans for several simple u/l-types that could be used as a base for ideas if you are interested. I like the Goat series too - quite a construct though. What about a elevator/rudder only tow-up straight line only 'thing' to maybe get 30ft alt ?

Basic glider? My mind is a cosmic whirl of thoughts and ideas spiraling outward and upward with .............................. wait, that was in Blazin' Saddles!

I have also been a collector of plans over the years. The most simple and lowest cost has to be the Woodhopper, Butterfly, Goat, Bug, and ULF-1 type aircraft. I think Sanlin’s Goat is one of the coolest and can be built with hand tools. Mounting a large model engine motor on this has proven to work quite well.

This airframe could be also used as a stationary trainer/simulator mounted on an anchored stand allowing full axis control.

I like wood substrate like white pine that is a local purchase. It’s heavier than aluminum but the goal for some is to build/fly safely at a low cost and purchase building materials locally to save money and expedite building before one losses interest?

Would you have the ULF-1 Plans?

Sorry I'm late with the reply Lonnie - No to having plans you ask about, but those I have I can copy and send if you'd like to see them. I carry them in my 'bag' just in case a conversation  starts at the hangar! Some thing I've talked about with Ryan W. is putting together a tail dragger ground looper baby carriage for dummies like me who are experiencing probs with a straight line!! If the cops used that test as sobriety check NO-ONE would be declared sober!

Thanks, I always wanted to see the contruction details of the strutless wing they use on the UHL-1 or 2. I'll have to check out your plans at the hanger sometime. It would be interesting to see what plans all of the member have.
